Zafar Kalanauri has resolved a number of disputes through mediation, for which he received mediation skills training and accreditation from leading mediators in the USA and UK. He is an accredited mediator from the USA and CEDR (Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution), UK, and an accredited Master Trainer in Mediation for CEDR and the IFC.
He is the Executive Director of Pakistan Alternate Dispute Resolution, the only private forum in Pakistan where experts in different fields resolve disputes outside the courtroom using various ADR mechanisms.
He is presently engaged as Alternative Dispute Resolution Expert for the Technical Assistance Project on Strengthening of Institutional Capacity for Judicial and Legal Reform in Pakistan by the Asian Development Bank. He drafted the Rules of Mediation and Conciliation for court-annexed ADR under Section 89-A of the Civil Procedure Code.
He is a member of the ADR/Mediation Legislative Committee of the Federal Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs on law reforms, including the new draft of Section 89-A and a full-fledged law on mediation, and a member of the ADR/Mediation Working Group for the Mediation Pilot Project at Karachi for institutionalizing mediation in Pakistan, run by the International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group) and the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court.
He drafted the Model Rules of Business for Musalihat Anjuman under the Gender Justice Through Musalihat Anjuman Project of the Government of Pakistan and UNDP, for the constitution and mobilization of Musalihat Anjumans in all union councils of the pilot districts.
